Developing Your Skills in Hearing

Searching For Truth: A Blog by Sherri Smith

We all have the ability to gently adopt nature’s wisdom into our lives. It would be first recommended to understand your dosha or constitution. You can access this online to do a general quiz or questionnaire to give you a greater sense of who you are at a balanced state. We are however, often, in denial of our qualities so having a professional assist you in more serious cases would be highly recommended. Once you have that determination, it would be valuable to begin to understand the qualities of the Elements in greater detail. This could potentially be your meditation. Think of the quality of fire and all that it entails….the obvious being it is hot, but also very biting if you’re too close, it breaks or consumes something down to its finest form, it can be wild and erratic and destructive with excessive air/wind, or gentle and warming when catered to. I have been studying the Elements for likely 12 years now in a deeper capacity and will never close the book on the teachings; the deeper you go, the more exciting it is to learn. Perhaps create a journal and make a chart with the 3 doshas or the 5 Elements and list all that comes to you.

We all have each of the characteristics of the Elements within us but in our own unique blueprint as previously stated. So also in your journey of understanding is to begin to develop a greater ‘ear’ for listening at a felt level what is needing our attentions. Take a moment and gently close your eyes and simply observe the current state of your breath. Is it short and rapid or slow and deep? Now follow that breath into your body and begin to explore where you can feel the varying levels of the element of Fire within. You may notice that your feet are colder than your calves, or your abdomen and esophagus feel warmer than your chest. What about your elbows or other joints? This is all information that as we become more intimately aware of ourselves, we can take action in restoring balance before it becomes louder in discomfort and unmanageable. I know within my own life I did everything I could not to ‘hear’, not to feel. I was always gravitating to something to mask the noise or pain. As I gain greater and greater respect for myself, I recognize how luscious and content I can feel without adding further discomfort or potentially creating the opportunity for disease. The qualities of each of the Elements applies to our personalities and behaviours, not just our physical bodies. They apply to the seasons of the year, the foods we eat, the spices and herbs we consume, our age and the time of day. Everything is a microcosm of the macrocosm. Do not let the information overwhelm you, it will all become relevant as you are ready to receive
