…there was a funeral being held down the road from our motel and we have heard the drumming and mourning throughout the night. Funerals are very important here and the process is quite amazing to witness. The body is lovingly prepared with an herbal wash, aloe or Shea butter applied and then a ceremonial last supper is prepared accompanied by millet beer. The funeral process moves to a common area where ‘professional wailers’ initiate the grieving. Deep wails and moans are a way to trigger the family and close friends of the deceased to begin to mourn their loss. This will go on until the mourners collapse with exhaustion, whereby releasing the spirit’s attachment to the physical world. Many ghosts are believed to be spirits not properly grieved and therefore attached to this plane as unfinished business. Throughout this funeral process there is drumming and dancing, food and drink. The musicians rotate and it is not uncommon to see some sleeping in preparation for their turn at holding up he space with music. The thought of dancing, singing or making music embarrasses some of us, this is a natural outgrowth of our increasingly repressive society. Even the most unrhythmic can bang 2 rocks together, shake a rattle or clap hands. Any action created is raising the power within the ritual. Ritual also requires emotion, and through music and dance this opens the energy for this. Dance is a physical movement that releases energy from the body and facilitates attunement with the deities of nature, and dancing organically removes the rational mind so we are able to connect on a much deeper level.
