Searching For Truth: A Blog by Sherri Smith
I can’t recall feeling vibrant for the majority of my life. Joint pain, allergies, thyroid disease, and often fatigue. As years progressed the symptoms worsened, coupled with weight gain, general malaise and weakened immunity. I also discovered some time ago I was nutritionally deficient. I tried many avenues but it only seemed to skim the surface and the symptoms continued.
Dr. Josh Axe recently hosted a webinar explaining a disease that is said to affect 88% of our population to some degree. The dis-ease is called Leaky Gut. The classic symptoms of this disease are thyroid issues, skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema, acne), weight gain, chronic fatigue, feeling unwell, adrenal fatigue, malnutrition/malabsorption,food sensitivities, anxiety/depression, sinus issues, joint pain, auto-immune disorder and more. What my approach was doing was treating the symptoms, not the root cause.
What causes our guts to become compromised? Leaky gut syndrome begins when the tissue of the small intestine becomes damaged and gaps start to form. The damage is created from all the crap we have ingested for the majority of our lives. Even the cleanest eater today still went through the days of margarine, Tang, sugar coated cereals and Spam. Many of us are affected by wheat, corn, soy, dairy, peanuts and alcohol. Over time we develop food sensitivities which can trigger allergies. The gaps which form in the intestinal wall allow food particles to sneak through into the bloodstream. The body recognizes substances that would be considered foreign invaders and the immune system attacks creating inflammation. This triggers he synthesis of antibodies to the various particles and voila we have a drastic rise in food allergies. As the immune system becomes exhausted from this consistent invasion, our organs become compromised. We first feel it as gas, bloating, fatigue after meals and indigestion before it goes south in the body.
The top triggers for Leaky Gut are:
GMO foods, antibiotics, Gluten (use Sourdough or Ezekial bread), processed sugar, dairy and food allergies.
The approach in healing and rebalancing this condition is to eliminate known allergens (wheat, dairy, peanuts, corn, soy and alcohol most common) and begin to introduce foods that heal. Bone broth is #1 in collagen which repairs the gut wall. Coconut oil, goats milk kefir, blueberries and squash are all medicinal for this condition. Next we treat with supplements such as digestive enzymes, B-12 and introduce high quality, gut wall adhering microbes and probiotics.
I have shared this to assist others in discovering their own imbalances and lead them to the road of health. Do your own research so you are well informed. There are many recipes online, several websites to explore Dr Josh Axe is incredibly well educated in this and have videos and recipes available. A lot of information is also available at http://www.pubmed.org.
Cheers to health!
