Searching For Truth: A Blog by Sherri Smith
Most people want to have more energy at the end of the day, how much resilience we have plays a big role in that. Resilience is commonly thought of as how we bounce back after a challenging situation, but a newer and more broader definition has emerged. It is now defined as the capacity to prepare for, recover from and adapt in the face of adversity, stress or challenge. When you are resilient, not only can you bounce back faster after challenging situations, but also have more ability to avoid those situations in the first place. Being resilient is like having a fully charged inner battery; you have greater capacity to remain calm, think clearly and be in control of your mind and emotions. You can roll with the punches instead of being thrown by the waves and crashing like an unaware surfer. There are 4 primary areas of inner resilience; physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. We expand our energy into each of the areas but it is the emotional area that we drain our batteries unnecessarily. When we are drained in one area, it will begin to have an impact on life and being. Learning self regulation techniques is key to optimizing health. We can monitor our heart rhythms to monitor incoherent patterns that are likened to having your foot on the accelerator and brake at the same time which is a sign that the brain and the nervous system are out of sync. It makes for a jumpy ride. Coherent thoughts and feeling create a more harmonious pattern; simple rituals such as practicing gratitude upon rising and again in the evening can bring greater energy coherence and build up our reserves as we achieve a more intelligent energy management. The child’s pose in yoga can give you a good read on inner body angst and allow for a more coherent rhythm to be established through the process of surrender.
