What is Tantra?

Searching For Truth: A Blog by Sherri Smith

You may have heard of the practice of Tantra, a limb of the yogic teachings – the pathway of building an intimate relationship with oneself. In mastering this we have a more intimate relationship with all that is around us; our relationship with others, the earth and our world. It has shown some resurgence and I truly hope the wave continues.

It enables one to become sensually nourished (meaning the 5 senses) and bringing our existence to a deeper embodied experience. It brings joy to our lives in a moment to moment expression. We are not seeking outward for the approval or completion as we self regulate our desires with commitment, detail and revery.

How often have we taken a photo but cannot remember any depth to the experience? Something inspired you to take the picture however so often the details of capture aren’t easily articulated or recalled. The aroma of the rocks or the breeze, the sounds of the chirping of the birds, the sensation on the soles of your feet. Our senses are thirsty for this and in lingering longer with the experience and to feel whatever is present becomes so spiritually nourishing. It melts our awareness into a simultaneous state.

We gotta slow things down. The challenge of our society is of time. Our minutes are consumed with obligations, tasks and distractions; the next shiny thing. If we can initially connect with our breath, it starts to draw our attention inward.

One practice that can assist one in feeling sensually nourished is to develop a daily practice indulging at least one of the senses for perhaps 5 to 10 minutes.

Allow yourself to become immersed in a stimulating aroma (such as essential oils or a natural steam) and breathe it in. Feel it integrating with the body, perhaps calming or cooling. Another experience could be to be fully present with the food you are eating – something beautifully prepared. Savour the delicious taste, nutrition, the mastery in preparation, and the sensations of your body receiving it.

We can play some beautiful music and allow yourself to melt into the vibration. Discover a beautiful skin care routine and nourish the tissue with the oils or lotion. Massage the oil or lotion into your skin slow and methodically. Surround yourself with beauty and gaze deeply into it with awe and wonder. Explore it with curiosity in creation. When our senses become deeply nourished, our world changes.

We can easily create reasons not to give ourselves this time. Shifting our perspective to that of self love opens the gateways of time. It allows us to live from a more rhythmic state and align ourselves with ourselves, our relationships with others and our environment from a deeply satisfied and full state of being. Taking even 5 or 10 minutes each day can create dramatic changes.

Not all sensations are considered desirable in our modern world however if we recognize that it is all part of the spectrum we are meant to experience and embrace for our personal growth, we can hold presence in the moment. The awareness of true beauty becomes ever present.
